In the news....(challenge by choice) Happy Columbus Day! Or, is it "Happy Indigenous People's Day!" More cities are recognizing Native Americans on Columbus What's your perspective? Notecard Self-Portrait Project Reflection and DP Update Today's goal is for each student to complete a project reflection and a DP update. When you have completed this, you may read for pleasure or work on schoolwork. Please don't waste your precious, valuable time. Exhibition How about putting together a class book? How about reading our stories for other students? Notecard Self-Portrait Write your name and the date; sketch a 2 minute self-portrait. R4P: Reading For Pleasure Drop everything and read...for pleasure. Share Stories Let's try a test run of exhibition and share our stories in class. Are you confident in what you're sharing today? Why or why not? Exhibition Discussion "When students know that the work they are creating in a project will be displayed publicly, this changes the nature of the project from the moment they start working – because they know they will need to literally ‘stand by’ their work, under scrutiny and questioning from family, friends, and total strangers." "An exhibition should be a celebration of student work" What are your ideas we have for how to exhibit this work you have done? We came up with two major thoughts: -We could make a book that includes everyone's stories. -We could perform author reading's for a variety of different audiences--in school or out of school. We'll check back in on this on Monday/Tuesday. A Chance for Revision
If you would like to make revisions to your final draft you can. You can turn this in by the start of class Monday. However, the maximum grade you can earn if you do revisions is an 85. Essentially, you waive your right to earn anything higher than a B+ if you do revisions. If you are happy with your final draft and think you have earned an A, you are welcome to take your chances with the grade I give you. Since this is the first project of the year, I wanted to give you a second chance to make sure you're handing in the kind of work you are really proud of. Attendance Notecard

Project Work Time
Update: Challenge Extension piece due Monday, Oct. 12 at the start of class. Please turn in Proposal today. Details below. Final Project Requirements 1 page single spaced 1 inch margins Font: Times New Roman, size 12 Name (justify left, top line) and Title (next line down, justify center) will go in "Header" Revise, Rethink, Earn Extra Credit: Critiques for Classmates For each critique you complete (and that I approve) you will receive 5 points in the "Are you doing your work?" section of the gradebook. You can turn in a maximum of 5 critiques for a total of 25 points! Boom! Create Your Own Challenge Extension: The purpose of a challenge extension is for a student to have a chance to go deeper with the curriculum of a class. For this project's challenge extension, I am asking you to transfer your storytelling skills to a new medium. I think some options are: 1) Podcasting in the style of "Radio Lab" or "StoryCorps" 2) Digital Storytelling (Video) 3) Narrative Art (Studio Art or Digital) 4) A product/form of expression not listed here that you are passionate or curious about. Please write a paragraph proposal of your challenge extension. Due Monday. In this paragraph answer: 1) The objective of your challenge extension--what will you do? 2) What will you have to learn to do it? Detail how you will learn these things. What "experts" will you base your work off of? 3) What skills or content ideas will you be going deeper into the curriculum of storytelling about? 4) Why will this extension be a challenge for you and not merely a "popsicle project" that is shallow and not intellectually rigorous? What steps will you take to ensure this? Turn this in Monday to the basket before you leave class. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT! Plan to have your story totally completed by the start of class Thursday, October 8th. You will be turning in a physical and digital portfolio that includes all of your drafts. Project Work Time Peer Critique Protocol. Give two critiques; receive two critiques. Complete the handout twice! Yes, the handout is a little pedantic, a little laconic, if you will. But, I need to make sure you all know what I mean when I say, "specific, kind, and helpful." **BONUS: For every extra critique you complete of a classmates work, you will receive 5 "are you doing the work" points. Maximum of 4 critiques total. Offer ends, 10/7/15 3:15pm. Attendance and Journal
Questions for Stephen Project Work Time: Revising, Rewriting, Building Better Stories Revising Checklists Galore IRON OUT THE BIG ISSUES FIRST! What's the point in spending hours refining things at the sentence level if you still have some major story level (plot, character) issues! You'll end up deleting things that you've spent a lot of time on, and while that's not inherently bad, it does get a little frustrating... "Need to know how well your writing, editing and revisions are going? Here’s a variety of checklists to help you evaluate where you are in the writing process." I've selected a couple of the ones below that I think are most helpful for our purposes. But, if you'd like to look around yourself, I highly encourage you to do that by clicking the link above. Mild: Revision Checklist for Novelist - Wow. This is a great checklist. Even though it's geared towards a novel, it still hits a lot of the major elements that we've been talking about the last 2 weeks. Medium: 10 Checkpoints for a Scene - The scene is the basic unit in writing. Your stories are most likely built around a few key scenes. Use this checklist and its big, open-ended questions to think about how well you are constructing your scene(s). Spicy: Style: Checklist for Fiction Writers - Crawford Killian is a Canadian novelist and professor. Use this checklist for improving your writing style once you've already hammered out the basics of your story (basics = character's desire, results, responses; specific details used consistently throughout the story) |
