Review Syllabus 1. Syllabus: Read and annotate – every section must receive at least one of the following annotations: a. Happy face: Expectations are clear, manageable, and non-scary b. Frowny face: Expectations are clear, but something is daunting, scary, or formidable about this section c. Question mark: I would like further explanation on this section. 2. Pair share: can you answer each others' questions? Or can you, together, articulate questions that require clarification? Write them down, and we will table them for open discussion. Class Contract On Friday we created a list of 10 values for our class. 1) Combine and winnow the list of 10 to a list of 5. Values mean nothing until the rubber hits the road. Unless you show it in action, can you really say that you truly value it?

Questions of the Day: What is education? What are your values as a person? What should our shared values as a class be? Today's Goals: 1) Set up Digital Starter folder on Google Drive. Save the trees! 2) Read and Discuss, "The Function of Education." 3) Create a short list of classroom values that we want to build our class around this year. Read Article titled, "The Function of Education" -Hard copy available in class. -Lecto Divina reading -Spirit Reading Starter Practice Remember, most days in my class will start with silent reading and/or writing time. Let's practice the writing piece. Try to write for a full 5 minutes on each question. You've got this! 1) What does the word "value" mean to you? 2) I have a quarter, $1, $10, $100. What would you chose and why? 3) What is the purpose of education to you right now? After 15 minutes of writing time... Take 15-30 seconds to think about which of your responses you want to share with your tables. Practice active listening. Laptop lids closed if you're not sharing, maintain eye contact, Whoever’s birthday is next goes first. Discussion Questions 1) Why do you think the author wonders if we’ve asked ourselves what education means? Have you before today? 2) Are the only two options of education 1) to pass examinations and get a job or 2) prepare us while we are young to understand the whole process of a life? 3) Is education a struggle for you? 4) How do you define “livelihood” (page 1, line 9) 5) What does the author mean by the phrase “the hidden things of the mind.” What does he say these things are? 6) Why does the author say that if you are wealthy, get a comfortable job, get married, there you will decay, deteriorate. Do you agree? Why or why not? 7) What is education? Who does it to who? Does it ever stop? 8) What do you think the author values? 9) What do you value in life? Class Values What do we value as people and learners in this class? How can we design a class agreement that instills the values at the core of our classroom experience together? 1) Split into groups, go into different corners of the classroom 2) 5 min- brainstorm on sticky notes things that we value in this class (one item per sticky) 3) 10 min- group, combine, winnow. Get to 5 that your group agrees on. 4) Merge with another group. 6) 10 min- Share your qualities, group, combine, winnow. Get to 5. 7) Give your list to Stephen! Homework
Make arrangements to bring a laptop to class every day this year. We will have loaner laptops available for yearly rental on Monday, August 31st. Introduction letter/Una carta (30 minutes) 1) Please write me a letter approximately 1/2- 1 page introducing yourself. You can say whatever you feel would help me to get to know you, or anything I need to know to teach you effectively. 2) Below is a list of suggestions to consider. - Your Humanities (English/Social Studies) experience, how much you enjoy or struggle the subject(s), what you like or dislike, etc. - Your educational preferences, learning style, types of projects that work well for you, where you struggle. - Your role in the classroom, personality type, roles you typically fill in a group. - General talents, both in and out of the classroom. - Your interests and hobbies. - Future plans, career, course of study, etc. - How much you like dogs (hint, the answer should be a lot).
