Starter: Finish Cold War Timeline Event
Take 15 minutes and finish the work you started on Friday.
Remember, it's important you make this quality work because no one else in the class will have researched the event you have--you are a delicate, unique snowflake in this sense.
We presented our events to one another after the starter time, and everyone did a really fantastic job! That's right, baby! That's how we do.
Announcement: The movie Interstellar has changed my life, or at least it feels that way. I like the way art can do that--it can create a conversation within yourself, or with your family, your friends, and the fact that those conversations can ripple across the ends of the internet and create large scale change? Well, that's pretty nifty. Anyway, you should go see it if you can.

Let's Talk About: Communism and Capitalism
Some key takeaways and vocabulary from our conversations:
means of production-
The stock of equipment and structures used in production/Things you own that you use to produce things for sale (means of production). Capitalists/individuals own the means of production in capitalism and the State/People/Government own the means of production in Communism or Socialism.
capitalism-
Economic system where individuals own the means of production.
socialism-
Certain major industries are run by the government (medical, mail, schools) -> those things are run for the benefit of the people.
communism-
Complete socialism. All means of production are owned by the people and are operated with the goal of the welfare of society.
We know capitalism because all in all we have grown up in a capitalist society, or at least a society that highly values free market capitalism.
This begs the question, how has being raised in a capitalist society socialized us?
Crash Course
We watched this video to get more context on capitalism and communism.

1. What patterns do you notice here about how these countries below are grouped?
2. What are some commonalities between countries in the different groups?
3. What possible explanations can you come up with for these groupings?
-First World Countries= US Allies (Blue): Canada, Western Europe, Turkey, Australia, Japan, S. Korea
-Second World Countries= USSR Allies (Red): Eastern Europe, China, Vietnam, Cuba
-Third World Countries=nonaligned (Green): Africa, Central and South America, Middle East, Southern/Asia/India
A proxy war is a war that results when opposing powers use third parties as substitutes for fighting each other directly.
Typically proxy wars function best during cold wars as they become a necessity in conducting armed conflict between at least two belligerents while continuing cold warfare.
As tensions raised during the Cold War, countries supported people in other countries who aligned with their ideologies.
Vietnam was a proxy war.
