Questions/Discussion/Goals for the Day Stephen's Announcements: 1) IMPORTANT DUE DATES -Project Reflection (put directly on DP, don't email/print), DUE TODAY -DP Update (minus the video of you reading) DUE WEDNESDAY -DP with Video of you reading your excerpt, DUE FRIDAY 2) HOUSEKEEPING -TURN IN STARTERS 1-7 TODAY IN BASKET -Clean out your Binders! -Clean out everything except for graded work (put in the filing cabinet in your folder) and the References Section 3) Presentations of Learning (POL) Update -POLS start on Wednesday, December 17th. -In the spirit of providing you with more support, we will take Monday and Tuesday 12/15-16) ALL DAY to prepare our POLS. Stay tuned for more information. -PS This is over a month away. Don't panic. We will get there together. After I answered questions for the class, we shifted to talking about our new mini-project. We only have 18 class days left for this, so we have to work hard and use our time wisely. Here's the nuts and bolts of the conversation... 1) I'm open to working with the class to make this as fun and interesting as possible. 2) The non-negotiable stuff: We will read The Things They Carried and do a Structured Academic Controversy on the mysterious Gulf of Tonkin incident. 3) Each class wrote down all the questions they had about the Vietnam War and what they wanted to study on sticky notes. Vietnam War: What do you want to know? If you were absent, make sure you email me or put a sticky note on the board answering this question. So far, we have... Vietnam War: What texts/movies/documents do you want to use to study this war? Literature: The Things They Carried Films: Platoon, The Green Berets, The Fog of War Gulf of Tonkin Primary Sources Vietnam War: How do you want to be assessed on your work/what you learn? Annotations? (I'm open to alternatives, but we must decide as a class.) Socratic Seminar(s). We will have at least one, if not two or three. Art Piece. Respond to the text, films, or unit in general with an art or writing piece. If you were absent today, and this is confusing to you, that's okay! We are working together to decide what and how we want to spend the last 18 days of this semester studying the Vietnam War. I will have a project handout for you either tomorrow or Wednesday with rubric and the all the important details for our mini project! Starter 1 1) Think about an object that you carry with you. This could be an item that is in your bag right now or something from your childhood. Describe the object in detail. What mood does it invoke; why is it important? 2) Why do we tell stories? 3) How do we know if a story is true?
